The Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN) is a network of professionals working together to accelerate learning and action around the risks of extreme heat worldwide to human health. The professionals targeted included government agencies, academics, international organizations, NGOs and private-sector boundary institutions. We created two products that were aimed at sharing resources and information around heat health and encouraging collaborative learning and partnership. The aim is to enhance technical and science-based decision tolls to better manage heat risks in the future.
Mercury is one of the top ten chemicals endangering human health and the environment worldwide. The poor handling and disposal of such products can damage ecological systems and human health. The Minamata Convention, which came into force in August 2017, is a global treaty that aims to protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds. To ratify the Minamata Convention, countries need to undertake assessments that provide baseline information of their current situation.

The toolkit was designed with health care providers in mind, with the aim of creating a clean, easy-to-navigate and easy-to-use toolkit.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations’ High Level Panel on Access to Medicine required additional graphics to be created for their Final Report, and we stepped in to fill this gap.
The client was provided with several look-and-feels to choose from. Tableau, Excel and Illustrator were used to create the different maps and graphs, suited to the chosen look-and-feel. These were made to be multi-purpose and shareable across social media platforms.
Lead is a toxic material, damaging the brain, kidneys, liver, lungs and reproductive system. Although many countries have implemented legislation to ban lead paint, there are a number of countries that have not done so, or for which there is little data. We helped WHO in their social media campaign aimed at highlighting the importance of banning lead paint globally.

Manuals for data collection and decision-making around malaria
Malaria is a major global health problem, with the African Region being the most severely impacted. In this Region, efforts have been made to align National Malaria Strategic Plans (NMSPs) with the framework of the Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016–2030. The vision of this programme is “a world free of malaria”. We worked with WHO to create technical user manuals that support and guide healthcare practitioners in effectively developing and reviewing these NMSPs. The manuals also provide step-by-step guidelines for carrying out several tasks that ensure high quality malaria data is collected from healthcare facilities and communities in the region. These manuals are now integral to the malaria programme activities undertaken by member states within the African Region.

Climate change affects health in many ways. A key first step in addressing these impacts is effective communication, including a plan for mobilising action and engaging communities and various levels of government. This project involved the production of climate change and health communication strategies for government and UN agencies in Tanzania and Malawi and associated climate change and health initiatives.
In consultation with scientists from the Save Our Seas Foundation, we developed a double page infographic spread on ocean acidification for incorporation into their magazine. The infographic provides a pictorial scene of ocean acidification, showing the causes of ocean acidification, the predicted effects, and mitigation efforts that society can make.
Ongoing design support for projects on sexual and reproductive health
Lushomo has maintained a partnership for two years with WHO to create products on sexual and reproductive health issues and research. We provide ongoing communication and design support, and have created annual reports, social media graphics, flyers and brochures during this time. These products help WHO communicate on a range of initiatives around contraceptives, gender-based violence, digital health, maternal health and many more.
Climate change poses immediate and longterm threats to human health and survival across the globe. Nowhere is this anticipated to have a greater impact than in Africa, where social, political, environmental and economic conditions are already fragile.

Preventing and responding to HIV drug resistance in Africa
The African region is home to the largest proportion of people living with HIV in the world. Global action to combat HIV/AIDS has had an immense impact on the continent, with increasing numbers of people receiving testing, prevention services and treatment, but these positive impacts are under threat from an increase in HIV drug resistance.
We worked with the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation in developing a summary report, “Making development co-operation more effective”, producing 79 four-page country reports, creating an animation, and a series of one page infographics.
We were eager to help communicate GPEDC’s work and findings on development co-operation through a number of different graphic-rich mediums.

Lushomo worked with the African regional office of the WHO to help communicate complex data from across Africa. Focusing on issues of health and the environment, Lushomo created new types of communication materials that will hopefully get the world talking about how to safeguard health in rapidly changing African environments.
In 2008, African countries adopted the Libreville Declaration, committing themselves to establish an alliance between health and environment, as a basis for a joint plan of action. In 2015, African ministers will reconvene in an effort to discuss the progress, challenges and way forward.
Lushomo used raw data collected by 34 African countries, analysed it, and created the second Synthesis Report on African challenges and change in relation to environmental determinants of health. The aim is to use data and design to inform, inspire and motivate policy-makers, donors and the broader public alike.
